COLLEGE ST. SCHOOL.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. Mr H. Christmas presided on Tuesday, at the first committee meeting for the year of the College Street School. Also present were: Messrs. C. C. Aitken, E. L. Cruicksliank, L. N. Paddy, E. Persson, E. A. Shackleton and W. R. Taylor. The report of the headmaster (Mr L. J. Plank) was tendered, as follows: “The school reopened after the summer vacation on February 1. , Fortyfive pupils have been admitted, th« present roll being 515 (last year 511). The changes in staff are: Miss C. L. Curry, Miss J. H. Ferguson, Mr L. R. Rickard, Mr J. L. C. Davey, replacing' Miss T. M. Simpson, Miss A. J. E. Thompson and Mr D. McD. Taylor. Mr Davey is acting as a supernumerary teacher. The amended curriculum "for February is being taken and as much life-saving and swimming instruction is given as is possible considering the limited time at our disposal at the municipal baths. We are grateful for the one and ahalf hours allowed and are pleased that 44 children have learned to swim the width of the baths so far this season. We propose to have our swimming day on Tuesday afternoon next. The top-dressing of the asphalted area has made a wonderful difference to the surface, and the men concerned are to be congratulated upon their work.” The headmaster said that the number of children who had learned to swim this year was higher than usual, despite the fact that the weather conditions had not ben propitious. Mr Taylor stated that he had received a report of children attending the school being held up at the corner of College Street and Fitzherbert Avenue owing to the .heavy traffic in that vicinity. He thought that the committee should request the City Council to provide a pedestrian crossing at that point. His motion in this direction was carried. A discussion took place on the most suitable day on which to hold the school picnic. The chairman said that in the past few years the picnic had been held on a Saturday in order to allow the parents to attend. However, the response to this plan had been disappointing. Other members were of the opinion that a day during the week should be decided upon, as this provided a break for the children and was a holiday for them. It was decided to hold the picnic at Awapuni on the first available Friday.
