ATHLETIC TITLES

MANAWATU CHAMPIONSHIPS. NINE TO KIA TOA. For the first time since their inception, the Manawatn amateur athletic championships were held in Palmerston North, last evening, the fixture taking place at the Sportsground, under the auspices of the Kia Toa Club. About mid-way through the programme slight showers of rain were experienced. Keen competition in the high jump championship saw last year’s record of loft. 2in.. set by K. Galloway (Kia Toa) ; exceeded by five inches, J. Ryan (Palmerston North) clearing the bar lat sft. 7in. after beating Galloway land N. G. Nix (K.T.), who tied for second place, by an inch. R. L. .Kay ! (K-T.) filled fourth place with a jump jof sft. 4in. Galloway gave faultless i exhibitions of the western roll. The slippery ground caused concern !in several of the events, notably the j jumping, when competitors slipped on | taking off and landed heavily, although 'none was injured. The 57 athletes j competing were representative of five clubs, Kia Toa, Palmerston North, Levin, Feilding, and Foxton. Winning nine of the championship titles, the Kia Toa Club was the most successful one. Two titles each went to Palmerston North, Feilding and Levin. At -the first bell in the BSO yards championship Haydon, L. S. Black and J. Scott were leading. Black came to the front, only to be displaced by C. McVicar, who, in turn, gave way to Haydon. Scott and McVicar occupied a handy position at this stage and as the runners came i into the straight for the final dash McVicar went to the front in spectacular manner to win by a good margin from Black, with Haydon next. This was one of the most outstanding races of the meeting. With only a few inches separating the one from the other, J. Ryan and iR. Gillespie, who eventually took first and second place respectively, were I leading at the end of the first group ;of jumps in the broad jump event. They experienced no difficulty in maintaining their positions up till the final jump. Detailed results are: ATHLETICS. High jump.—J. ltyam (Palmerston Nortii) 1, K. Galloway (K.T.) and N. G.
