EXPLANATION TO BRITAIN. TOKIO, Feb. 14. The British Ambassador (Sir Robert Craigie) made representations today to the Foreign Minister (Mr Arita.) regarding: the Japanese occupation of Hainan Island. It is announced that Sir Robert received the same assurances as those given to the French Ambassador yesterday, when Mr Arita told him that J/i-pan had no territorial designs on Hainan and would occupy it only so long as it was militarily necessary.
