BIG CHINESE ATTACK.

HEAV Y LOSSES IN FLICTED. LONDON, Feb. 14. The Chinese have launched a great offensive on the Hunan front, throwing a quarter of a million troops equipped with, new artillei-y and mechanised units against 40,000 Japanese, whom they attacked with bayonets, says the Hong Kong correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. The Chinese inflicted heavy losses, and in addition to capturing hundreds of prisoners and much war material, advanced several miles. An Independent Cahle Service message from Hong Kong says it is estimated that only 300,000 Japanese south of Manchukuo are facing 2,000,000 Chinese regulars and 1,000,000 more guerrilla troops inside their own lines. The reorganised Chinese Air Force also took the initiative for the first time, bombing and machine-gun-ning the Japanese trenches.
