CRICKET

MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. PHYSICAL FITNESS REQUEST. In connection with circular letters received at a meeting of the executive of the Manawatu Cricket Association, last evening, from the Physical Fitness Campaign Committee, the chairman (Mr A. M. Ongley) commented that he was of the opinion that it would be difficult for cricketers to participate in the cavalcade parade, in spite ol the starting time having been put forward to 12.30 o'clock. It was the consensus of opinion that this was so, and that it was essential for the plavers not to lose a playing Saturday, as the games were more valuable to physical fitness than a parade. Those present at the meeting were Messrs A. M. Ongley (in the chair), R. A. Brace (secretary), G. Love, J. Gallichan, H. von Stunner. J. Gavey, E. .7. Worry. R. S. Warwick, G. Griggs and D. Jones. The presentation of trophies to the winners at the end of the season will be made this year at a function arranged bv the' United Club along the lines of that held last year by the Old Boys' Club. This decision was reached in response to an invitation from the United Club to the association to attend the gathering. The V.M.C ; A. Club wrote expressing appreciation at having had the services of Mr .1. R. Sheffield, the Wellington Association's coach, placed at the disposal of two of the club's players. Compliments were extended to Mr Gallichan, the senior A statistician, on the statistics he had prepared covering the first- round of the competition. Mr Ongley said these were very complete and were, therefore, of greatinterest to all clubs as well as to the association. Reporting in connection with the visit of Sir Julien Calm's XI to Palmerston North, the secretary said arrangements for their billeting and entertainment were well in hand. The Umpires' Association was granted £2 2s.
