MANAWATU CRICKETERS.

TEAM RETURNS

STORY OF A COIN

Following their outstanding success against Nelson in the elimination match of the Hawke Cup series, tho Manawatu cricket team returned home to-day, arriving from the south shortly after noon. Alurchison, who was in the South Island on business when the team depaited for Nelson last week, did not accompany them home. Tlie story was recounted to a “Standard” reporter shortly before the arrival of the team by an enthusiast that, while in the Post Office with the captain (W. Norris) just before his departure for Nelson, the latter had dropped a coin on the floor when he took some money from liis pocket. This had landed tail side up, and the enthusiast said he had advised Norris to call tails when the coin was tossed at Nelson. When the team reached here to-day the captain said that lie had called tails and won.

Mr G. Love, the manager, said excellent weather had been experienced throughout, except for one slight shower.

The captain stated that the wicket was hard and fast, and that at the end of Hie game it was “still good for another 1046 runs”—the number scored on it. On one occasion Pritchard, when dismissing a batsman, had sent the bails flying for a distance of 47 yards. Pritchard was presented with the ball with which he made the “hat trick.” Although the team travelled to Nelson from AVellington by air, they returned by the Nelson-AVellington boat.
