WATER SHORTAGE.
GISBORNE’S PREDICAMENT,
GISBORNE, Jan. 21
Tho position of the Gisborne Borough water supply had developed to such a serious point yesterday that pumping was commenced from the Waipaoa River. Some relief was given by a small quantity of rain, which fell last Friday night, and pumping from Mangapoike was suspended temporarily, but was resumed on Tuesday. The water there, however, was quickly reduced to the former level, and, in addition to the shortage at the head works, some leaks developed in the main to further aggravate the position. This is the first occasion oil which water has been secured from the 'Waipaoa River to augment the borough supply, although a pump has been installed in the river ready for an emergency. Approximately 15,000 gallons an hour are being secured from the river. Since the level of the water at Waingake was reduced because of tho dry weather, additional chlorination was resorted to at tho request of the Health Department.
