The end of the second day’s play in the Hawke Cup elimination cricket match, saw Manuwalu in an almost unbeatable position with a lead of 146 runs on the first innings and 357 for seven in the second. Nelson’s first innings produced 191. Tile highlight of the day was Pritchard’s hat trick - whan he had Glover caught in the slips of}' the first hull of an over, then clean bowled R. Newman and Du Feu with the next two. Pritchard completed a fine howling performance. taking seven wickets for 68. Broughton and C. McViear opened Manawatu’s second innings and 68 were added in 55 minutes. Broughton went lbw and McViear was later howled by Newman. Murchison and Robertson were next in, the former settling down quickly. Robertson put up a

catch after lie had scored 20. Three wickets were down for 133. Murchison, batted confidently, but at 63 snicked one to tlie ’keeper. Norris and Gallichaii kept up the scoring until the former succumbed to a ball from L. Max —lß3—o —lS. Gallichan knocked up a smart 46 including seven boundaries. Pol lift could only raise two, but S. McYicar batted splendidly and was still undefeated at stumps with a score of 82. He gave a couple ot hard chances early, but at the close of play he looked like getting his century.
