HOLIDAY RACE MEETINGS
OWNER’S ASHHURST DOUBLE
TRENTHAM MEETING CONCLUDES
(By “Spectator.”)
Two holiday race meetings were held in the Wellington province yesterday, the principal' local interest being- centred on Ashhurst, where Lucullus Lad and Gay Chou won a double for their owner. Lucullus Lad, in winning the Cup, was piloted by J. Chaplin, who succeeded in the same event on Wildfiower last year. The Trentham meeting, at which Awapuni horses did well, was brought to a conclusion, The Bigot winning the Thorndon Handicap. Both Density and Haughty Winner (who beat the consistent Lady Montana by a nose) turned out to be dual winners at the meeting. Lady Ina added to her impressive record on the Trentham track by being placed in the open sprint each day, being second in the Telegraph Handicap, winning the Metropolitan Handicap and being third in the City Handicap. By doing this, the Awapuni mare paralleled her feat of last year, when she had identical placings in these events. She won £SOO in stakes at the meeting.
Miss Appellant, the outsider of the field, sprang another of her big surprises when she won the President’s Handicap at the Thames meeting, which concluded yesterday.
(Winner trained by A. Jenkins, Opaki.)
