ASHHURST MEETING.

LUCULLUS LAD’S CUR

SPRINT TO FLAMMARION

MORNING FLIGHT’S WIN

(By “Spectator.”)

Features of the racing at the Ash-hurst-Poliangina Racing Club's holiday meeting yesterday, when there was a large crowd, weather conditions were ideal, and the course was in perfect order, were the returns to form shown by Lucullus Lad, winner of the Ashhurst Cup, and Morning Flight, who took the Gorge Hack Cup. Lucullus Lad had not won since the spring meeting at Masterton, while Morning Flight also enjoyed his first success since the spring. Flammarion was too good for Gay Chou at a difference of 20jll>. in the open sprint. Hanover took the Heck Hurdles for Awapuni, jumping brilliantly for an easy end-to-eml win. Sporting Gift was responsible for two remarkable performances during the day. Badly left in the open sprint, he came with a great run to be right up with his field at the close. Finally, in the last race, started right from the outside, and giving his field another big start, he came with a wonderful burst of speed at the finish to almost overhaul Gay Chou, who j won by a nose, hut would have been been beaten in another stride. After an inquiry into alleged boring out bv Gay Chou at the finish, the ‘ judicial committee decided that there had been no interfere!-ftc by the winner with Sporting Gift, and after -the payment of the dividends had been delaved for 1 25 minutes, the placings in the race were upheld. Ga,v Chou's success completed a double for bis owner, Mr SV. Devon. Lueullus Lad having won the Cup. Both horses were piloted bv the Awa puni apprentice. J. Chaplin. The totalisator handled -CIS 2-tl for the day. compared with Cl 7 525 tOs last year. an increase of £192-’> 10s. The attendance was almost a record, the gate takings showing an increase of £2O. J. Chaplin was fined £2 for looking round on Lueullus Lad when riding the winner of the Cup. Descriptions of events nddiiional to those which aooearod in Ihe first edition of the “Standard” yesterday are as follow: ] LFCULLCS LAD'S CUP. Lucullus Lad. showing a long overdue return to form, won the Ashhurst Cup, but he was assisted bv the tact that-, in behind the naeenviker Aureus, he was allowed to make his own rules for practically the whole of the journey. Galteenmrc finished very fast on the rails for second place, and'' "Winsome Lu also put in a strong finish to head off the favourite, Ned Cuttle, for third place. - Six furlongs from home. Aureus. Lucullus Lad, Master Cyklon -and Amatory was the order, Tiger Gain and Royal Choice moving up fast. Lucullus Lad was in charge from Royal Choice and Aureus three furlongs from home, where Galteemore had moved up into sixth place, Master Cyklon having steadily gone Lack front a favourable position on the rails. Nothing had a chance of heading the winner in the run home. Aureus, having her first start over a distance, performed very creditably from out in front to finish fifth, followed by Amatory, Helen Ford. Master Cyklon, Tiger Gain and Royal Choice who. apparently, w.as taken up a bit too early in the running. JUDGMENT PREVAILS. Judgment, who had shown promise at Stratford at the New Year, opened his account by winning the Novice Stakes by a neck in a ■ ‘blanket” finish after going to the Jront at the distance. Flying Flag was second, but was most unlucky, appearing to receive a check at the crucial stage of the running in the straight, hut she came again to finish very last, and just got up in time to beat the Awapuni colt, Caution, by a nose. Daregain, the warm favourite, made the pace all the way, hut was joined by Judgment half a mile from home, this pair being two lengths in front of Titter and Flying Flag. This was tile order into the straight, with Caution practically last at that stage. Titter faded out, lmt Daregain finished fourth, followed by Brazil and Red Chief, after Judgment and Flying Flag had fought out the finish. Caution appeared on the scene with a remarkable late: run, and but for being badly placed early might have won. THE HACK CUP. Morning Flight, finishing fast on the outside to overhaul Viracious when the latter had appeared a likely winner at the distance, scored his third success when ho annexed the Manawatu Gorgo Hock Cup by half a length. There was a similar distance hack to Donegal, who had been the pacemaker with Viracious all the way. Te Morehu, the favourite. looked to he running along easily three furlongs from home, hut could not close the gap on the two leaders when the final pressure was on and Morning Flight put in his run from fourth place entering the straight. Te Morehu finished fourth, followed by Var Lap, Stella Lux and Yed Prior, who was very slow away. ' FILETTO FINISHES FAST. ■ Filetto, a winner over the same distance at Marton, and who had run a good race at Trentham, finished' veryfast in the Siberia Hack Handicap to take the decision by a short neck from Copycat, who had been placed earlier

in tho day. Only a. head away third was the favourite, Hunter’s Eve.

Kokako and Hunter’s Eve opened up a gap early on the field and were six lengths clear of Filetto, with Copycat and Jeanne handy at the turn for home. Tho pacemakers could not see it out, though Hunter’s Eve hung on for third. Lexden was fourth, followed by Kokako and Screen Star. A GREAT FINISH. There was a great finish to the Raumai Handicap, in which Gav Chou, in completing a double at the meeting for Iris owner, won by a hare nose from Sporting Gift, the pair finishing very wide out after a brilliant final burst of speed by the latter, with Buster Brown, who came through fast on the rails, third. Flammarion was the pacemaker into the straight from Granville, Minter Quex .and Gay Chou, who then came through and was worrying Flammarion when Sporting Gift joined issue over the last half-furlong. Sporting Gift, who started outside a trestle on the extreme edge of the field, stood the opposition a big start and was last until three furlongs from home, when he started to unwind a splendid run, and gathered uj> those in front of him stride by stride until he nearly caught Gay Chou right on the post. Alyth was fourth, followed by Mister Quex and Granvale. RACING IN DETAIL. HACK HURDLES HANDICAP, of £150; second horse £3O and iliird £2O. One mile and a half. 3 HANOVER, Mr H. H.
