CROQUET

SECTION PLAY COMMENCES

Croquet in the Dominion championships was continued, yesterday in perfect weather and, the lawns at all greens being in excellent order, some excellent games were witnessed. A large number of onlookers gathered .at both the Northern and Manawatu lawns, and were not disappointed, for the standard of croquet was of Hie highest order. The best game of the day was that played by F. C. Bryan, formerly of Palmerston North and now of Waimarie, Lower Hutt. Not _ only did Bryan excel in the execution of the game, but his tactics were of the highest order. Brvan is as yet undefeated in the men’s championship, and although at this stage it is impossible to forecast the winner, it looks as if this player has a very good chance.

Description of play

LADIES’ OHA AT PlO N S HIP

Airs Bryan and Mrs Anstis.—A splendid game was witnessed in this match. Both were playing well and shooting well, particularly towards the end of the game. In and out play was a feature throughout, Airs Bryan maintaining a small lead, but in pegging out missed with the first ball and put the other hall out. Mrs Anstis hit in and Airs Bryan did not got another opportunity to get the halls. This was the fifth game played during the tournament wherein a player who had deliberately pegged out a hall had not been able to get control in the match before a finish bv the opponent. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP.

.Mrs Henderson v. All's McClymont. —Neither could get going for some time, when Airs McClymont baulked at No. 5 with all the balls set out. Airs Henderson, taking advantage of the opportunity, made a break to rover, wiring at the peg. She then went to the peg with the second ball, wiring again at the peg, Airs McClymont making three more outs before Mrs Henderson finished, 26—9. HANDICAP DOUBLES.

F. C. Bryan and Aliss D. McKenzie y. Airs McCreath and Aliss Perrin.— Airs AfcCrcuth played a steady game and soon had her clip round ori the return, but the opposition gradually secured a lead which they maintained until the finish, the game ending, 26 15. Rev. Tve and Afrs Taylor v. Afrs Kibblewhite and Griffen.—The latter pair had practically all the play and both played steadily, giving their opponents few opportunities to score. Afrs Griffen was the first to get her clip round and this was followed by careful play by her partner, the score ending 26—4. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP.

F. C. Bryan v. D. MeClymont.—McClymont was the first to get going, and played a perfect break to 4 back, wiring at the first hoop. Bryan shot at his opponent’s balls and missed, whereupon MeClymont also missed. This gave this enterprising player a splendid opportunity to put into execution the renowned triple peel, and, playing faultessly, he completed the round, in the course of which he peeled his opponent’s ball through the three last hoops, pegging it out. Thus crippled, MeClymont had an uphill game to fight, which he did to the best of his ability. The Wellington player wired the balls' from his opponent wherever possible, and only on about two occasions did MeClymont 'have an open shot, and even then the balls were placed in such a position that when he did shoot in he was only able to make one point in the turn. A. G. F. Ross v. Mrs McLennan.— Ross was playing more like his usual

form in this match, and although the triple peel was executed in two turns, he played the various strokes perfectly and his opponent, who at one stage made a break of seven, was not able to make much headway, the score ending 26—14. Airs Morgan v. H. A. Penn. —Penn won the toss and chose the balls. Mrs Morgan went to the fourth corner; Penn followed. His opponent missed when Penn hit in, set the balls out for a break and played for the nextturn. Afrs Alorgan missed the shot, when Penn baulked in the first hoop. This opportunity Airs Alorgan took advantage of, and completed a break to 4 back, setting up the balls for the next turn. Penn missed the shot when Airs Morgan, playing carefully, went to rover in two turns. lenn eventually scored two points before his opponent finished a good game. Afrs AfcLennan v. Kusabs. —-Mrs McLennan, who had hitherto not been playing as well as usuak struck fqjin in the game against Kusabs. the winner making substantial breaks and shooting well, the game was finished in good time, the score being 26—6. „ ~ F. Harrison v. Airs Bryan.—Both have been playing well during the tournament, and did so again in this game in the open championshipHarrison has already had several good wins to his credit, and he added >et another when ho defeated Afrs Bryan by a margin of two points. Break play was executed bv both, and it was only at the last, when Harrison got control, that the winner was decided. Airs Palmer (Christchurch’) v. Airs McClymont (Wanganui).—Afrs Palmer was at the top of her form in this match, and gave Airs McClymont tew opportunities to score. Building up the balls on each occasion. Airs Palmer executed substantial breaks, her opponent only scoring two points before the match was completed. LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP. Airs Henderson (Wellington) v. Airs Gambrill (Palmerston North).—All's Gambrill, who had not been p.ay.ng particularly well in the doubles match during the morning, came right back to form in the match played against the Wellington player. Airs Gambrill, who has a quiet style, shoots well ami takes her hoops with precision. In this game again Airs Gambrill made practically two faultless breaks allowing her opponent only one chance to score when she made tour points. HANDICAP SINGLES. Airs Tiffen v. Mrs Wood.—Mrs Tiffen played well in this match, gaining a lead which was maintained throughout. The winner, who has been playing steadily throughout the tournament, also defeated H. P. Stratton in the open championships by a good margin ot points.
