SHARK OFF BEACH.
PETONE BATHERS ALARMED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. 22. Bathers at Petone were alarmed oh Saturday afternoon when a ten-foot shark was observed cruising off tho beach. The police were informed so that measures for the safety of the public could be taken, hut the big fish disappeared and was not seen again. Two boys who were rowing a small boat not far from the beach sighted the shark only a yard or two from their frail craft. They made for the shore, which was not far distant. The shark did not follow them, but the alarm was given and bathers were warned. Many left the water, but the holder spirits continued to bathe in the shallows, keeping a careful lookout.
