ANNIVERSARY DAY.
HOLIDAY ON MONDAY. Ninety-nine years' will have elapsed to-morrow since the opening of an important chapter in the history of New Zealand’s colonisation, for it was on January 22, 1840, that the Aurora, the first of a small pioneer fleet which had left Gravesend (England) in 1839, sailed into Port Nicholson carrying the initial band of the 1500 immigrants who founded the Wellington province. Though the anniversary actually falls to-morrow, . the holiday which marks the occasion will he observed on Monday, and there is a large programme of attractions in the district to provide enjoyment. Foremost will be the Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club's meeting. The Manawatu Scottish Society will hold its annual picnic at Awapu'ni, and there are four representative cricket fixtures arranged, three of them at the sportsground. Bowling greens will he well occupied with a rinks tournament at Terrace F,nd and progressive pairs tournaments at Manawatu, Takaro and Northern. The Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association’s district championships will be continued on the Linton Street courts, and croquet championships will be in full swing.
