SOUTH AFRICAN VETERANS.
ORGANISATION DISCUSSED. PRESENT SYSTEM FAVOURED. Echoes of the withdrawal of the executive of the South African War Veterans’ Association, at a Dominion conference, at Christchurch, recently, were heard at a conference, in Palmerston North on Saturday evening, of representatives of branches of the association in the North Island; there being delegates present from the New Plymouth, Wanganui, Levin, Wellington, Lower Hutt, Bush, Masterton and Palmerston North districts. The chair was occupied by Mr T. McWhirter (New Plymouth). A statement was supplied to the Press following the conference, this reading: “Arising from the withdrawal of the Dominion executive and other delegates representing North Island branches from the last Dominion .conference of the South African War Veterans’ Association, held in Christchurch, and the consequent consideration of a separate organisation for the North Island, a conference was held in Palmerston North on Saturday evening, there being present 25 representatives from North Island branches. While it was unanimously agreed that the action of the Dominion executive in withdrawing from the conference was fully justified, it was resolved that the interests of the association can be best served by maintaining the present Dominion organisation.”
