Mrs It. Jenkins, of Stratford, is spending a holiday in Wanganui and will later visit Palmerston North. Dr Denny Gillies, radiologist at the 1 almerston North Hospital, will leave on Friday for Australia, and intends to visit Sydney and Melbourne, in the course of a holiday with which she will combine a little post-graduate work. Dr Gillies expects to be away about two months.

Members of the Turakina branch of the W.D.F.U., among whom was Mrs J. A. Harris (provincial president), paid a visit of inspection to Girls’ Flock House, which is being acquired by : the Dominion advisory board, on Monday. A London correspondent states that Mr C. S. Dempster, the New Zealand cricketer, who is to play for Sir Julien Calm’s eleven in its tour of the Dowill be married on October 27 to Miss Margaret Elizabeth Jowers, eldest daughter of the late Mr Joseph Jowers, and Mrs Constance Jowers, of Leicester. The ceremony will be at. Holy Trinity Church, Leicester. At a meeting of the Cuba Street Ladies’ Guild tributes were paid to the work of Mrs A. Ferguson, who is shortly leaving to spend three months with

her daughter, Mrs P. W. Hunt, of Gore. Mrs T. R. Hodder said that Mrs Ferguson would be greatly missed by the guild and the Women’s Auxiliary. Mrs Boniface said Mrs Ferguson had been a most efficient president of the W.C.T.U. during her term of office. Rev. A. Blakemore added his tribute on behalf of the Church, saying they all hoped Mrs Ferguson would return to Palmerston North later. The death has occurred at Wanganui of Mrs Jane Stewart, mother of Lady Hewart, of London, wife of the J,ord Chief Justice of England. Mrs Stewart was the daughter of the late Mr David Peat, who gave Peat Park to Wanganui, and was educated at Wanganui Girls’ High School. She was a prominent member of St. Paul s Church. She leaves two daughters, Lady Hewart, who was formerly Miss Jean Stewart, and Mrs James Robertson, Waverley. There are five sons, Messrs Malcolm, Ronald, Lloyd, James, and Alexander Stewart. Mr A. W. Thojnpson (headmaster) reported to the Terrace End School Committee last night that Miss M. It. Lumsden, who is in charge of the Hospital class, had received an appointment at Rangiotu, and would be leaving the staff on October 1. Miss Lumsden, he said, had been in charge since May 27, 1955, and had managed the class tactfully and efficiently. Later in the meeting a letter was read from Miss Lumsden notifying her resignation from the teaching staff. Mr Thompson explained that Miss |
