TOWNSEND AND DEMPSTER. Received August 27, 9.25 a.in. LONDON, Aug. 26. In the county cricket fixtures L. F. Townsend, the former Auckland coach, scored 70 for Derby and T. B. Mitchell took 7 for 51. C. S. Dempster, who is also wellknown in New Zealand, made 57 for Gloucester. The honour of the highest total of the series went to John Langridge with 215 for Sussex. Details: Derby v. Essex.—Derby: First innings, 190 (Townsend 70); second innings, 160 (G. Pope 85; P. Smith, 5 for 55). Essex: First innings, 173 (Mitchell 7 for 51); second innings, 4 for 178. Essex won by six wickets. Gloucester v. Leicester.—Gloucester : First innings, 160 (Allen 80; Smith, 8 for 40); second innings, 214 (Flameon 5 for 53). Leicester: First innings 202 (Goddard 5 for 73); second innings, 160 (Dempster 57; Goddard 8 for 62). Gloucester won by 12 runs. Hampshire v. Surrey.—Hampshire : First innings, 82 (Watts 4 for 30, Parker 4 for 24); second innings, 180 (Watts 4 for 40). Surrey:, First innings, 123 (Herman 5 for 66); second innings, 7 for 140. Surrey won by three wickets. Middlesex v. Lancashire.—Middlesex: First innings, 332 (Brown 114). Lancashire: First innings, 2 for 123. Rain fell and the match was drawn. Worcester v Notts.—Worcester: First innings, 73 (Woodhead 7 for 24); second innings. 399-(Perks 75). Notts: First innings, 364; second innings, 4 for 109. Notts won by six wickets. Somerset v. Kent.-—Somerset: First innings, 225 (Lewis 6 for 75); second innings, 177 (Harding 5 for 61). Kent: First innings. 215 (Valentine 114; Wellard 7 for 651; second innings, 160 (Wellard 6 for 50). Somerset won by 27 runs.
