EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” AUGUST 27, 1908.
There had been much comment in England over the action of a German torpedo boat-which had quietly entered the Tyne during the progress of British naval manoeuvres. Tlio vital statistics in Palmerston North for August had been: —Deaths, 13; births, 44, marriages, 9. R. Arnst had commenced training for his sculling race for the world’s championship held by W. Webb (Wanganui). Good progress had been made with the construction 4 'of. the Otira tunnel, which had been pierced to a point 510 feet from the face. There had been 150,322 sheep in the Manawatu County in 1908, a decrease of 292 compared with the previous year. In the Eangitikei County there had been 665,923, an increase of 64,157 1 The Second Ballot Bill, designed to prevent minority representation in Parliament,-had been introduced and had been hotly debated.
