Though the returns for two small cheese companies are not yet to hand, figures now available after an examination of the standardised balance-sheets of the co-operative companies disclose how great lias been the value of the dairying season to the Manawatu district (excluding the Woodville area) during the past season. Gross production, before the deduction of manufacturing costs, realised £l,556,153, and advances to suppliers, including final payments, aggregated £1.392,535.

Fifteen factories contributed towards the release of these funds in areas which make Palmerston North their principal commercial centre, but by far the greatest distributions on a butterfat basis were made by nine butter companies, which paid out £l,282,792, their total receipts by sales, including stocks assessed at current market values, being £1,426,061. Final payments from the surplus in the appropriation accounts of eight butter factories operating in the Manawatu district during the past, season aggregate £189,172, most of which has been paid out to suppliers during the past -week, giving a marked stimulus to business activity through the release of these funds. Figures for ten companies in this area manufacturing butter disclose that the average advance over the season has been 15.03 d. Tonnage manufactured bv nine of these companies totalled 11,874 tons of butter.
