HOCKEY CONTROL

MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. SUMMER MATCHES. A meeting of the executive of the Manawatu Hookey Association was held last evening, those present being Messrs K. M. Struthers (in the chair), R. A. Brace (secretary), W. H. Wilson, E. Tucker, D. Wilton, H. Byers, L. Martin, IV. Gough, J. Kearns, P. McLachlan, and R. L. C. Aitchison. A grant of £5 was made towards the expenses of the manager (Air J. K. Raton) of the women’s team to participate in the Dominion tournament at Gisborne. . Authority was given the manager to represent the Manawatu Association at the conference to he held in conjunction with the tournament. The Broadway 7 Club wrote suggesting that hockey be played on one evening a week during the summer. The matter had been suggested to members of other elubs and they had been in accord with the idea. The club considered that such games would do much to promote better stick control. Mr Martin was of the opinion that summer hockey should be played this summer; his club was prepared, -to raise several teams. Air Struthers: The big question will be that of grounds. Mr Brace: I do not think there is any game that will stand being played all the year round. The chairman: I see that a summer association has been formed in Dunedin. Air Wilson : I suggest that a special meeting be called of all interested in summer hockey. Mr McLachlan suggested that the clubs be written to with a view to ascertaining how many teams would be entered if games were played in the summer months. Mr Wilson moved that, after winter hockey had ended, a special meeting be called of players interested in summer hockey. Mr Byers seconded the motion, which was carried. REPRESENTATIVE AIATCHES. Air Brace reported that the Wellington Association was agreeable to a match being played there between a Wellington and a Alanawatu team for the Clift Shield on September 3. The matter was left in the hands of the emergency committee to arrange. Mr AlcLaohlan asked whether it was advisable to send the representative team to Auckland if they were beaten by AVellington. “In view of the lack of interest,” lie said, “I do not think we should send the team to Auckland to play for the New Zealand Shield.” The Bush Union is to be invited to play a match against the Alanawatu B representative team on September 3, at Palmerston North. An extract read from the official organ of the New Zealand Association prophesied that the present tour of the Indian team would result in a financial loss to the association. AVOMEN’S TOURNAMENT. Several alterations have taken place in the personnel of the women’s team to participate in the tournament at Gisborne. The team finally chosen is as follows: Goal, Mrs C. Brown; backs, Mrs D. Tucker, Miss E. Hill; halves, Alisses T. Rose, P. Hancox (vice-cap-tain), A. Teague; forwards, Misses M. AlcQueen, M. Galvin, Airs M. Kearns (captain), Miss J. Allan, and Mrs D. Griffin. Emergencies: Alisses K. Maxwell and K. AVenham. The team, which will leave for Gisborne at l a.m. on Saturday', is considered to he a strong side. Mrs Iv. Hughes will be the chaperone. GENERAL. Owing to various factors combining it make it inadvisable to play interchib matches on Saturday, it was decided that five-a-side games take place. The tournament will be divided into three divisions, senior A, senior B, and junior. It was felt that no arrangements could be made for women’s matches.

The secretary was instructed to send a telegram to the Auckland Association to ascertain whether it would be possible for it to accept Manawatu’s challenge for the New Zealand Shield this season.

The Palmerston North City Council is to be written to requesting that the returfing of the circles on all the grounds used by the association be carried out.

Public Service are the winners of the women’s sealed handicap competition, having a lead of two points over the runners-up, Manawatu Knitting Mills, and High School Old Girls who each secured three points.
