FATAL CRASH.

PIONEER AIRMAN KILLED. NEW YORK, Aug. 23. A message from Buffalo says that Captain Frank Hawks was fatally injured when his “Aircar,” a new type of small aircraft, crashed when taking off on a demonstration flight yesterday. The ’plane struck some telegraph wires and burst into flames. Captain Hawks and his passenger, Air J. Hazard Campbell, received fatal burns. ~~ Alr Campbell was a noted sportsman. Captain Hawks once said: “I expect to die in an aeroplane and won’t feel happy if I don’t.” Farmers pluckily pulled the men from the flames, an exploding, fire-ex-tinguisher adding to the danger. The “Aircar” was the latest attempt to promote cheap flying. It was burned out.

Captain Frank M. Hawks was a pioneer flier in the United States. He flew from Los Angeles to New York in 1929 and from Buenos Aires to Los Angeles in 39 hours 52 minutes in 1935. After a remarkably fast flight from London to Berlin he was termed “The Human Bullet.”
