Two years ago J. Ferrier, Australia’s leading amateur, made a gallant bid foi the British title, reaching the final, to be beaten by Hector Thomson. Hattersley is the outstanding member of the Australian team which was invited to England this year by the Royal and Ancient Club. Prior to his departure he had several close matches with Ferrier, to whom he was runner-up in the New South Wales championship. Hattersley came over to New Zealand for the championship meeting at Hamilton last October. Though he did not reveal his best form there-he showed capabilities by obtaining fourth place in the Open event. With an aggregate of 301 he was only two strokes behind the triple deadheaters, J P. Ilornabrook, E. J. Moss, and A. J. Shaw. His last two rounds of 72 were the best of the day. In the amateur championship, which followed, he was beaten in the semifinals, 1 up, by B. M.‘ Silk, the eventua' winner.
