CITY BUS SERVICE.

PROFIT FOR YEAR. INCREASED PATRONAGE. A statement showing “a very gratifying increase in custom as a result of the council’s policy of providing modern means of transport with a definite appeal,from the comfort and riding points of view,” was placed before the City Council last evening by the town clerk (Mr J. R. Hardie) in presenting his annual report. A profit of £617 for the year in running the service was disclosed, a.s against £353 in 1937, £642 in 1936 and £616 in 1935. The service, stated Mr Hardie. had conveyed more passengers (544.174) than in the preceding three vears (513.865 for 1937. 491,548 for' 1936 and 449.997 for 1935). A substantial rise in running costs was also evident, the figures for the four years being: 1938. £6123: 1937, £5896; 1936, £5297; 1935, £4830. The profit and loss account reflected the financial position, and the figures for the transfer to the net revenue account for the period mentioned above were: 1935, cr. £349 16s sd; 1936. cr. £O6 13s 8d: 1937, dr. £79 14s 9d; 1938, cr. £302 11s Id.
