THE DEER MENACE.
DAMAGE TO BUSH. Per Press Association. AVELLTNGTON, April 20. One of I>ke official parties engaged in destroying deer has been working in the picturesque Urewera bush country, on the East Coast, where the animals were found to be great in numbers and doing considerable damage. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. W. E. Parry) stated to-day that his officers had been aware that, deer were numerous within the territory bounded by the Parahaki Stream and the upper Wairoa River, but had not expected to find them in such numbers. “One report I have,” Mr Parry ndeled, “show's that the beautiful bush is badly menaced by deer, and as the country is very steep erosion in its early stages is already to be seen. Splendid work is being done by the men employed in their endeavours to arrest the menace, as is shown by frequent communications received from land-owmers.”
