SALES TAX YIELD.

Sales tax collections during February totalled £230,525, a decrease of £87,073 below the total in January, states the latest Abstract of Statistics. The yield from this tax is normally very low in February, since sales-tax collections in that month are almost wholly on account of sales made in January. January is the slackest month of the year in respect of retail selling, due, of course, to the reaction following the Christmas shopping season. The February sales tax collections, though the lowest since that month of last year, were abnormally high for a February month, being 18.4 per cent, above the previous highest February figure—that for last year.
