RACING AT RANDWICK.

PANDAYA BEATS NUFFIELD. WIN FOR AJAX. , SYDNEY, April 20. The weather for the third day of the Randwick meeting was a mixture of sunshine, wind, and rain. The last two race 6 were run in heavy showers. The attendance was 24,000, compared with 20,000 in 1937. Ajax, as expected, made hacks of his opponents in the All-Aged Plate, his time for them ile, 1.354, equalling Ajax’s own Australian and New Zealand record. Ajax has now won £IB,OOO in stakes. Pandava and •Nuffield staged another duel in the Champagne Stakes, on this occasion Pandava winning owing to Nuffield allowing his rival to get too far in front. Old Rowley won the Cumberland Plate all the way and thus atoned for recent disappointments. Country Party would have been most unlucky to have lost the Coogee Handicap, in which he received several checks. Bristol, although badly placed in the City Handicap, came from the clouds to win .in the last stride from Sal Volatile. The jockey H. Keewong continued in the lead and withstood a hot challenge by Spearbine in the run home, winning by half a length. Capaneus was four lengths away third and then came Asolando. Time, 4.214. King’s Head and Mohican attempted to close on the champion, particularly Mohican, who got to within two lengths entering the straight, but Ajax again drew away and won easily by a length and a half, with King’s Head throe lengths back. The leading division at the mile were Tapestry, Old Rowley, El Senorita and Northwind, with Allunga well behind; Tapestry weakened at the turn, where Old Rowley was in charge from Ei Senorita and Allunga. The latter, having come through the field, made a stirring battle with Old Rowley, who lasted long enough to win by a head. El Senorita was threequarters of a length away third. Northwind was fourth. CITY HANDICAP, of £7OO. One mile and a-half. BRISTOL. 7.7 1 SAL VOLATILE. 7.2 (Neale) 2 SILVER STANDARD, 8.8 (Munro) ... 3 Twelve started, including Sir Regent, Improvement and Viceroy. This race was notable for many changes, but Soft Step, Sal Volatile, Billy Boy, Gay Knight and Improvement were always well placed. Bristol, who was seemingly out of the race, shot past the field at the distance and won by half a length, with three-quarters of a length to the third horse. Improvement was fourth and Sir Regent seventh. Time, 2.32£. DEATH OF TRAINER. SYDNEY. April 20. The death occurred to-day of C. P. Barden, trainer and part-owner of Apollo, who .was second in the Sydney Cup. Barden, a Western Australian trainer, had been in hospital since his arrival.
