TOTALISATOR RETURNS.

EASTER FIXTURES. SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE. The total isator is considered to be a. fairly reliable barometer of a country’s prosperity. If this is so then there is no scarcity of money in the Dominion, as a glance at the totalisator returns for the ten race meetings held during the Easter holiday period shows that the amount invested by the public reached the substantial sum of £375,082, or £57,891 more than at the same clubs’ meetings during Easter of 1937. ‘ At all ten meetings the attendances were reported as large. The principal fixture was the Auckland Racing Club s meeting at Ellerslie and here the totalizator turnover amounted to £132,430, which was an increase of £46,654 over the Easter meeting of 12 months back, but the increase is accounted for to a large extent by the fact that Easter Monday last year was a wet day and the programme had to be postponed to the following day. At the Feilding meeting on Saturday the totalisator ■showed a substantial decrease compared with the corresponding day last year, but this was due to bad weather, rain falling throughout the day. The table below .shows the returns at the meetings held; Rise or
