Son and Heir's win at Wairarapa on Monday broke a long series of failures. Prior to Wairarapa he had run 23 times, and his only successes had been away back in October. Three Seconds. Arctic Star was not quite good enough to annex a major prize at the Riverton meeting although he did well. He had three starts in the steeplechases and ran second in each. Second Oaks Success. Icing gave Mr G. M. Currie his second win in the Great Northern Oaks, Damaris being the previous winner in 1928. On the other hand, Limond has now sired four winners of this event) the other pair being Lady Pam and Golden Hair. An Unlucky Pair. According to the Dunedin writer “Sentinel,” who is a sound judge, Galleon and Studley Royal were decidedly unlucky in the Great Autumn Handicap. They drew the rails and wore last to leave, with the result that at the end of the first couple of furlongs they were giving the leaders over 10 lengths”’ start. Apart from them the rost of the field had a fair chance, but it really appeared as if Studley Royal and Galleon were unlucky in not fighting out the finish. Dictate might have just about won as the race was run, but he made his final effort, too far from home. Golden Chest’s Win. Disposed of only two months ago by his owner-trainer, Mr C. Renata,, of Foxton, Golden Chest already shows indications of proving a good investment for her now owner. The Thomond mare won the Gimcrack Handicap at Riccarton on Tuesday against fair company and she returned a good dividend. It will be remembered that 12 months ago she won the Woodhey Handicap at Awapuni by two being tenth favourite in a 14-horse field. Golden Chest is now trained at Riccarton by F. Barr, who came to Foxton and made the jrurchase on behalf of a client.
