BOMBING OF CANTON

MANY BODIES RECOVERED.

WELLINGTON, April 21

The following cablegram was received by the Chinese Consul in Wellington from Hankow yesterday: “Yesterday 51 enemy ’planes raided Canton. Flying low, they machinegunned streets in the business centre. They also dropped bombs in the educational centre on the northern part of the city. They wrecked two dormitories of the Canton Middle School and two dormitories in the Primary School established by the Canton Municipality. Fifty-three houses were also destroyed. So far 136 bodies have been recovered from the debris, and 122 persons were seriously injured. ‘‘The enemy’s report that Marshal Cliiang Kai-shek was wounded by a Japanese bomb at Shangsha has already been denied by the Government spokesman. The day before Easter, Marshal Kai-shek broadcasted throughout the country on the subject,. \Vhy we believe in Jesus.’ This fact is sufficient evidence that the Japanese statement is entirely without foundation.”
