THE MAORI RACE.
THE PEOPLE’S INTEREST. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, March 2. Delegates to the Municipal Conference at New Plymouth visited Manukorihi Pa at Waitara this morning and with speech and legend were reminded of the old time Maoris as a race of fighters, thinkers, and craftsmen. A stirring welcome in the native tongue greeted the 250 visitors who were shown over the meeting house erected to the memory of the late Sir Maui Pomare. Hon. P. C. Webb said New Zealand owed a great debt to the Maoris. It was their duty to make good the many wrongs they had done to the native race, and he looked forward to the day when every Maori would possess his own land! He assured the Maoris the Government would do all in its power to make the lives of the Maoris better, to preserve their art. educate their children, and to promote the health agencies they require.
