STAMP NOTES

Two recently overprinted stamps from the Dutch East Indies showing that stamps of these values have been all used up, are seen at left and right, with Egypt’s stamp for the Eye Disease Conference, in the centre.

Albania, small South-Eastern European Monarchy opposite the heel of Italy on the Adriatic Sea, and just north of Greece, has recently issued a nine-value set of stamps marking 25 years of independence. Albania issued its first stamps in June, 1913, Turkish stamps of the 1908 issue overprinted with the double-headed Albanian eagle. The next few months more Turkish stamps were liand-stamp-ed wdth overprints and in December the first new Albanian designed stamp appeared featuring patriot Scanderberg. The June, 1913, issue is Albania’s most valuable.

South Africa is to issue eight animal stamps at an early date for publicity for Kruger National Park, a game preserve. It is understood there will be 100,000 stamps of each value. . . .. Hungary will have a fourteenvalue set out to mark the nine hundredth anniversary of the death of Patron Saint Stephen. Admiral Horthy, Regent of Hungary, is to appear in a new issue soon. . . .Lichtenstein has added two more pictorial values to its new set. . .Greece marked the marriage of Crown Prince Paul with a three-value set, and issued its Balkan Entente stamps later. . .Danzig has issued five charity stamps featuring statues. . . Egypt honoured the Cotton Congress and the International Radio Congress meetings at Cairo with three value issues. . .Japan has issued a new half-sen stamp featuring the old trading ships" which were licensed for foreign trade when Japan was practically isolated from the rest of the world more than a hundred years ago. At least two of the world’s biggest stamp dealers, Scott Stamp and Coin Co., of New York t and Stanley Gibbons, of London, have decided not to stock or list in future miniature sheets issued in limited quantities. Such limited issues, they claim, are mainly speculative. Miniature sheets issued in large quantiites as those of the United States will be carried.

During the World "War the ruling prince and the international commission advisers left Albania; it was occupied by Italian troops, and proclaimed an independent republic. Provisional stamps with the doubleheaded eagle were issued in 1917 by the new republic, and various overprinted and surcharged issues of these stamps and similarly designed stamps continued to appear till 1920, when neV stamps came from the presses. In 1922 a pictorial set with views of the country, and the subsequent overprints show revolution and the opening of the legislature. One issue was overprinted especially to prevent a large quantity of stamps stolen during the revolution being used. President Ahmed Zogu first appeared on Albanian stamps of 1925,. These stamps were also overprinted and surcharged later, and a new issue marking the change from republic to monarchy was printed in 1928, showing the president as King Zog I. These were overprinted for various purposes right from the start. In 1930 another pictorial set was issued, and was overprinted in 1935. Albania’s air mail, postage, due and charity stamps have suffered likewise from frequent overprinting.

Carry one of each of your duplications in a stockbook which fits your coat pocket when going trading at a friend’s or at a stamp club.

To commemorate the coronation of Archbishop Borgarin, its first archbishop, Paraguay issued this stamp in 1930.
