ATHLETIC EVENTS.

CMCKET ASSOCIATION’S MEETING. The Feilding Cricket Association’s athletic and cycling sports meeting at Kowhai Park, last evening, attracted a large attendance of competitors and spectators and, favoured with fine weather, the programme was enjoyed under pleasant conditions. The track was in excellent order, .and the programme offered was a comprehensive one. Splendid entries were received. At the conclusion of the sports the competitors were provided with light refreshments, and the ladies responsible for the catering were thanked for their services.

Prior to the commencement of the programme Mr J. Gordon Eliott, president of the Cricket Association, addressed the gathering through a loudspeaker and outlined the objects of the carnival, and thanked the public for its support. The principal cycling event, the three mile race, attracted 20 starters, and. the finish was fought out by the scratch riders, Gibbs and Allen, the latter securing the verdict with sease, and 110 was drawing away from his opponent at the finishing tape. . In the mile running event A. Bevege, of Wanganui, .won from R. Lambcrton, of Feilding, in a close finish. A feature of the programme was the half-mile walk, in which only two competitors participated. E. A. Cocker (Feuding), who is 56 years of ago and has not competed at a sports meeting for 30 years, secured second place. He was given an enthusiastic round of applause. The gate takings totalled £3O 7s, while the entry fees amounted to oyer £lO. The programme was completed in excellent time, the last event concluding shortly after 10 p.m. Thanks are due to the bt. John’s Ambulance for attending. Only one spill was experienced. Cocker, in the half-mile cycle event, crashed at the end of the first lap when endeavouring to leave behind Allen. Fortunately, he was not seriously hurl.
