(From Our Own Correspondent.) TAONUI, Feb. 22. , Ideal weather conditions prevailed when a large attendance gathered at the Taonui School to bid farewell - to two very popular teachers, Miss Curtis and. Mrs Walker. An enjoyable concert occupied the first half of the evening, and this was opened by a song by Miss J. MacLeod, “Escape at Bedtime” and as tho encore item, “April is a Lady.” A humorous recitation, “At the Breakfast Table,” by Miss Julio Kendrick was followed by “Jealousy.” A tap dance was presented by two little girls, Ruth McDowell and Coralio Blcnkhorn, of Palmerston North, Miss June Scott accompanying. Mr Bond was heard in the songs, “You are My Heart’s Delight” and “Beneath thy Window,” Miss Garrett being at the piano. Pianoforte solos by Miss Garrett were well received, as was also Miss Noelcno Perrin’s recitations, “Tho Rose of Prayer,” and “The Little Dog Angel.” Mr W. Sllortall, accompanied by Miss Garrett, rendered “Good-bye” and “You’ll Get Lots of Lickin’s.” Miss Ruth McDowell gave two entertaining dances, accompanied by Miss Scott. The last itom was contributed by Ruth McDowell. Mr E. R. McFarland then requested the guests of honour to ascend tho stage. Miss Curtis , and Mrs Walker were recipients of beautiful bouquets, presented by Miss J. Kendrick aiid Miss Audrey James. Paying fino tributes to the work Miss Curtis had always dono during her nine years as headmistress, Mr McFarland was unstinted in liis praise. He referred to the piano, which would always stand as a tribute to Miss Curtis, as in order to acquire the nocessary funds she had devoted tho whole of her Christmas holidays to running a putting green in Feilding. In speaking of the teaching ability of Miss Curtis, Mr .McFarland said that not only were the children well educated, but that they also received individual attention and a very good moral grounding. On behalf of the parents, children, friends and well wishers lie then asked Miss Curtiß to accept a pair of fireside chairs, as a token of regard and appreciation. To Mrs Walker Mr McFarland paid a tribute. Mrs Walker had always been most kind and considerate to tho little children, the speaker said, and during her seven years’ sojourn as infant mistress she had endeared herself to children and parents alike. Mr McFarland asked Mrs Walker to accept a beautiful chiming clock as a memento from her numerous friends and well wishers in Taonui, and expressed the good wishes of cveryono present. Miss Curtis thanked everyone for the kindness, both in making the evening so enjoyable and during the whole of her period of teaching at Taonui, and expressed her appi‘cciation of tho presentation, fen© nad always done what she had considered was best for the wolfarc of the children, and hoped that the parents would accord wholehearted co-operation and support to her successor. To her assistant during the past seven years Mrs Walker, Miss Curtis paid a glowing tribute, and wished her every success in her new position. She thanked Mr McFarland for his kind remarks and for liis assitancc, also the School Committee, and all who had been of such assistance to her during the nine years at Taonui. Mrs Walker expressed lier heartfelt thanks and appreciation of lier beautiful gift, and regret at leaving the school and children she had come to regard so highly. The past seven years had been some of tho happiest of her life, Mrs Walkcr continued, and by their kindness and consideration tho parents had always helped -her immensely. To Miss .Curtis Mrs Walker paid very high tribute, and saw that a very strong bond, of friendship had been built up between them, and. that Mi-5 Curtis had boon more than a senior teacher to her. After the concert supper was served and dancing concluded the entertainment. Music was supplied by Messrs U. Dick and D. Durie and Mr W. Marsdon was M.C. Mr McFarland passed a vote of thanks to the artists and also thanked Mcsdames F. J. Russell and G. J. Kendrick for arranging tho programme; he apologised for the absence of Mr A. Campbell. Miss Curtis was attractively gowned in a tunic frock, tho skirt of which was b ack satin, with tunic of floral satin, while Mrs Walker wore a model frock of navy floral georgotte. Ml-s Taylor, who is to relieve Mrs Walker, wore an American model frock ot black corded silk. Among those present were the following ladies: Mcsdames F J. Russell, C. J. Kendrick, R. R. lait, J. M.
