APPOINTMENT OF BISHOPS.
LONDON, Feb. 9. Pointing out that the Prime Minister, Mr Chamberlain, is a Unitarian, Lord Hugh Cecil, in the Church Assembly, suggested that it was inadvisable that he should advise the Crown on the appointments of bishops. He said: “In the reign of King Henry VIII, a Unitarian would have been burned at Smithfield. I do not suggest the) incineration of Mr Chamberlain, but I think it scandalous that this-'should;be part of his duties.” The Bishop of Durham (Dr. Henson) recalled that Mr Bonar Law (was a Presbyterian and Mr Lloyd George a Baptist,'.but he confessed that personally he‘disliked the prospect of bishops being nominated by the Primate. He considered the voice of the laity should be heard.
