EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” FEBRUARY 24, 1908. In the. House of Commons a Sweated Industries Bill had been, introduced and referred to a select committee. Mr Gladstone had said, however, that the Government would not be committed to the principle of a compulsory minimum wage.
The roads in the Awaliuri district had been described as “simply awful.”. Several Awaliuri farmers had refused offers of £SO per acre for their farms.
The Moutoa Drainage Board had commenced the construction of. an overflow channel 40ft wide and 4J miles long. It had been said that the channel would give outlet for the drainage of 12,000 acres near Foxton. There had been a financial panic in Japan. Twelve of the largest firms had failed, while three banks had refused to pay out. The Conciliation Board had been sitting in Palmerston North hearing the dairy factory workers’ dispute. The board had proceeded from factory to factory to secure evidence.
