NEW COAL MINE.
STATE PLANS OUTLINED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Dec. 15. On account of the approaching exhaustion of the James State coal mine near Greymouth, it has become necessary to open up a new mine in the nine-mile area of the State coal reserve, said the Minister of Mines (Hon. P. C. Webb), this evening. Two seams of excellent coal were proved by diamond drilling, and it is estimated the quantity of coal contained in the area proved is approximately 6,000,000 tons.
The opening up of the new mine involves the driving of four stone tunnels together with a return airway, which necessitates approximately 7500 feet of driving in addition to tunnels. A rope-road approximately 2150 feet in length has been built. Concrete buildings have been constructed for housing of the plant and a large bath-house fitted with up-to-date equipment is to be built on a site near the entrance to the main drive. It is anticipated coal from this mine will be available to supply the market for the winter of 1939. The present bins and screening arrangements at the James mine are to be replaced by an up-to-date structure in steel and concrete and the screening arrangements. will provide for four sizes of coal to cater for domestic use and industrial purposes.
