During the year the Chamber has exercised interest in the proposal to open up the Koputara Beach to the public by the provision of legal roading facilities. The chamber was in January last represented in a deputation to the Minister of Public Works (Hon. R. Semple) urging assistance, when the Minister stated that before anything could be done in this direction the requirements would have to be legalised. The meeting received a letter from Mr J. Hodgens, M.P., who drew attention to the fact that the Crown had no authority to use public funds for a proposed public road—at least it must be surveyed and dedicated as a public road, ■ and in this instance the Minister desired certain assurances from the local body which was to control the district. Mr Hodgens was personally very keen to see this beacn with a proper legal approach, and -would even go so far as to support contributions being made by the Palmerston North City Council towards the cost, knowing that citizens had a very natural right to facilities that could be brought so much nearer to them. If the chamber had any Rather suggestions to make he would be only too pleased to co-operate. Mr Hodgens enclosed a copy of a letter from Mr Semple on the lines of his own communication.

The president expressed appreciation of the gracious action of the Dannevirlce chamber in conveying congratulations on the occasion of the city’s Diamond Jubilee.
