CRICKET

MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. HAWKE’CLP PLAY. The Manawatu Cricket Association’s management committee met last evening. Those present were Messrs A. M. Ongley (chairman), H. von Stunner, C. Eglinton, J. Gallichan, E. J. Worry, G. Griggs and A. A. Brace (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. R. Hardie and R. S. Warwick. The Combined Services Club requested permission to play three matches at Napier between December 27 and 31, against Taradale, Hastings, and Napier. The letter was considered in' conj unction with one from the Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association inquiring if the Junior Cricket Week was to he held in Palmerston North this season.

It was pointed out that a junior representative game would be played at that time, while the Junior Cricket Week was also due to be held in Palmerston North this season, by a decision of the teams playing last year.

Mr Brace said that there were a number of representative matches taking place at that period, and Mr von Stunner commented that it might be hard to secure a team. The biggest problem would be securing the servicesof persons willing to arrange the fixture. It might be best to call a meeting of junior players. Members of the management committee indicated that other commitments would prevent him from organising. the fixture. It was decided to call the meeting; two delegates from each junior team are to attend.

It was also decided to hold over the Combined Services Chib’s application in the meantime. The Auckland Cricket Association wrote accepting a proposal for a junior representative match to be played at Palmerston North on January 5 and 6.—lt was decided to advise Mr W. H. Wilson, the selector. The Canterbury Cricket Association wrote confirming arrangements for a senior representative match at Palmerston North on January 12 and 13. —Received.

The Feiidiiig Association wrote suggesting that a Goldfinch and Cousins Cup match be played on -December 18.—It was reported that club competitions would be pi.iyed that day and that, as an alternative, a suggestion had been made to the Feilding Association that the game be played on Boxing Day or January 3. There had been no reply to this proposal. The Taranaki Association wrote suggesting December 27. 28 and 29 for the Hawke Cup challenge match owing to leading players being unable to travel on December 24 for the opening of the, match on December 25, as previously suggested.

The chairman said that Manawatu had played at Taranaki on a Christmas Day, which day would produce the largest attendance of the three days in Palmerston North. The match could possibly start at 1.30 p,m. on Christmas Day and time be made up on each other day by commencing plav at 10 a.m. • The secretary pointed out that even then • there would be time lost. There would also be some difficulty as to leave for the Manawatu players.

It was decided to reply that a change of dates could not be agreed to, and that the time of play is to be that laid down in the Hawke Cup rules. It was decided to point out that there would be difficulty in some of the Manawatu members securing leave, while the Manawatu team had also played on Christmas Day in New Plymouth. The New Zealand Cricket Council advised that the Poverty Bay and South Auckland Associations had taken up their challenges for the Hawxe Cno this season.—Received. The City Club forwarded a letter from R. R. Dilks in which he asked to be regraded from senior B to junior B as he could play only on two of eacv three Saturdays.—lt was decided not to grant a regrading to junior B, from which the player had recently been promoted.
