CROQUET TOURNEY.

PRIZE-GIVING. After enjoying a week of fine weather for the tournament conducted by the Manawatu Croquet Association, it was unfortunate that rain should set in yesterday when the final games and prize-giving took place. During an interval in the afternoon’s play, competitors gathered in the pavilion for the prize-giving. Mrs W. J. Robertson, president of tlio Manawatu Croquet Association, congratulated the winners and run-ners-up and said that the clubs were very fortunate in having such a capable secretary as Mrs S. J. Parkes, who had worked hard during the tournament. ‘ She thanked Meedames "Scroggs, Radford and Benfell, who had acted as referees, the greenkeepers, the Press a.nd those who assisted in rthe kitchen, principally Mesdames Turner, King, Baxter, Leeson, Stevens, Spinley, Corbridge, Harvey and Murphy. She hoped that those who had competed this year in the 17th annual tournament would come back next year and bring more of their clubmates. Mrs Parkes thanked all those who had assisted in any way, and mentioned that there had always been a quick response to any appeal for help. She called for cheers for the president. Petrie (Oroua) and Miss Tennant (Takaro). Handicap singles, A grade.—Mrs Colquhoun (N); runner-up, Mi's Poison (Masterton). G grade championship.—Mrs Connor (N); runner-up, Mrs Permain (N). G grade handicap.—Mrs Leeson (Manawatu); runner-up, Mrs Permain (N). CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES. Final.— Mesdamcs Nicholson and Bryant beat Mesdames Simpson and Wood, 26 —11. This i was concluded after the presentation of trophies. FURTHER TOURNAMENTS. The next important fixture for local croquet players will be the North Island tournament opening at New Plymouth on January 7. At this fixture Airs Gambrill will be partnered in the doubles with Mr C. Bryan (Lower Hutt, formerly of Northern Club), her partner for the Dominion tourney at Wanganui on January 18 being Mr E. Veitch (Lower Hutt). Airs Anstis will be playing with Airs Caldow (Wellington) at both fixtures. Other players from Palmerston North planning to take part in the Dominion tourney include Mesdames T. Simpson, L. Wood, H. Brown and AlcAlurray.
