GOLDFIELDS REVENUE.
CHARGE FOR COLLECTION
The charge to he made by the Mines Department for collecting goldfields revenue on behalf of local authorities is to be reduced from 10 per cent to o per cent, as a result of an amendment recommended by the Governor-General, under the Constitution Act, to the I Mining Amendment Act recently passed liy Parliament. The necessary. Governor-General’s message giving effect to the change was introduced in the House to-day and was passed. “I stated when the Bill was _ before the House,” said tlie Minister of Mines (Hon. P. C. Webb), “that I had no objection to reducing the department’s deductions from 10 per cent, to 5 per cent. However, it is impossible on constitutional grounds tor tlie Legislative Council to make the necessary amendment, hut we are taking the course now being followed in order to meet the wishes of most country members.”
