EXCHEQUER RETURNS.
BRITISH FIGURES.

The Exchequer returns contain a feature of interest in the first recorded receipts from the national defence contribution introduced in the last Budget and a subject of great controversv at the time. The amount is only £2OOO, but the total estimated yieid for the present . financial year, which has still four months to run, is no more than £2,000,000. The total ordinary revenue amounts to £415,657,903 compared with £394.046,903 at the corresponding date last year. The total expenditure less selfbalancing items is £537,700,249 compared with £491,524 268 on the corresponding date in 1936. The total floating debt outstanding'on November 20 was £936.075.000 —an increase of £237.945,000 since March 31—compared with £852,690,000 for the corresponding date last year.
