MISHAP TO ’PLANE.
IN WELLINGTON HARBOUR. Per Press Association. WELLNGTON, Nov. 24. An amphibian ’plane from H.M.S. Leander came down to the water this morning with the wheels down, and overturned on reaching the surface. No one was injured. The amphibian had been at the Rongotai aerodrome for testing and overhaul purposes and> was returning to the ship when the accident occurred. The pilot was- Lieutenant G. W. R. Nicholls, and two R.A.F. ratings were in -the machine. The only damage was that the upper wing was torn a trifle.. A launch from the Leander was standing by in ease of an emergency and rushed to the upturned machine, while further assistance was forthcoming from a naval cutter some distance out for training purposes. The amphibian on striking tile water first nosed in, and-then tilted backwards quite slowly, enabling the occupants to climb-out without difficulty. They were taken to the ship in the launch. The ’plane was pulled to the ship’s side and got aboard at noon.
