RETURNED SOLDIERS’ TOURNEY,

Favoured with perfect weather, the ex-servicemen’s golf tournament held on the Tahoraite links, Dannevirke, during the week-end, proved a very successful affair. Competitors numbered over 120, including representatives from practically all New Zealand, units, the Imperial Army and Highland regiments, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. Besides a large complement from Dannevirke, they came from Palmerston North, Wanganui, Wairarapa, Cefitral and Northern Hawke’s Bay and the King Country. The day proved thoroughly enjoyable, and the spirit of the comradeship of the war-days prevailed. At the conclusion of play, the competitors foregathered for tea. Thanks for their having travelled to the tournament were expressed to the visitors by Mr W. J. Forsyth (chairman of the organising committee). Replying on behalf of the visitors, Colonel J H Whyte, of Palmerston North, said that this had been the first Dannevirko tournament he had attended, and he had been greatly impressed by tho atmosphere of good fellowship. Mr Forsyth presented tho following trophies :—Somme championship (best gross score), German helmet presented by Mr M. E. Howe: J. Goss (Wanganui), 78; runner-up, belt and clasp, presented bv Messrs J. W. Dobson and G. T. O’Hara Smith: V. Stratford (Waipukurau), 81. Beersheba handicap (best nett score): E. Wilson (Palmerston North), 71. F, H. Townsend and Stratford tied, but the latter having already won a trophy was not eligible, and Townsend lost when tile trophy was drawn for. Gallipoli bogey : F. H. Townsend, all square, B. P. Hopkins and A. G. Melles equalled this score, losing on the draw. Th 6 teams match was won by the Mounteds’ C team, consisting of H. B. Roach, W Aiken, J. D. Davidson and p. H. Stroclian. The unit championships were won bv S, Avling (Rifle Brigade), W, J. Forsyth (Gunners) B. Stoddart (Mounteds), B. P. Hopkins (Infantry), H. 0. Baines (Wellington), and L F. Cooper (other units). The “mug cup” for the “most astronomical "rose score” was won by J. Cochrane“ Except for tlm. Somme championship. all the trophies were 181 b. B hell cases.
