NEWBURY

(From Our Own Correspondent.) NEWBURY, Aug. 28. The sympathy of the district is extended to Mrs J. Gore and family in the loss of her mother, Mrs W. Patten. Mrs Patten had been ill for a very long period and her demise was not unexpected. Mrs Patten’s death removes a very old identity in the district, where she was wellknown and highly respected. The sympathy of the district is also extended to Mrs J. Thomas and family, of Newbury Line, in the sad death of Mr J. Thomas, who was accidentally killed in a motor car accident. ... Mr D. Griffiths, of Eastbourne. Wellington was the guest of Mr and Mrs Noel Wood during the week. Tho largest, number for some time attended the fortnightly euchre and dance in the Newbury Hall. Four ladies tied for first place and so decided to divide the prizes. They were Mesdames E. R. Davies, Baker, A. McCulloch and E. Shaw. For the men’s prize Mr D. Dennett was first. Mr Shepleski second, and Mr 11. Ti Oka third. Mrs \V. Wild donated a cake. Mr Powell supplied the dance music,. Mrs Shaw playing an extra. The hosts and hostesses were Messrs W. Penberthy, S. Morris, H. Penberthy and Mesdames S. Death,’ E. Shaw, IV. Penberthy and J. Cheetham. Mr IV. Penberthy was M.C. The farmers are all smiling after the wonderful rain. It was indeed needed, and one can almost see the grass grow now.
