THE COMPETITIONS

DEMONSTRATION CONCERT. CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS. The week’s festival of the Palmerston North Competitions Society was brought to a conclusion on Saturday evening, when a grand demonstration concert was held. A variety of talent was in evidence in the forty items presented, and the aduieriee, which packed the Opera House, was highly appreciative. During an interval the president of the society (Mr J. A. Nash) thanked the public for their patronage during the week and expressed the society’s appreciation to all who had contributed to the outstanding success of the festival. He felt suro that next year there would be 1500 entries instead of 1200, as the popularity of such competitions was growing year by year. The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford), patron of the society, congratulated the committee on the success which had attended its efforts. The competitions deserved every support, lie added, because not only did they bring over 300 visitors into the town but their benefit to the competitors was far-reaching. Mr Nash then presented the championship cups and certificates as follow :

Champion lady elocutionist. —Miss Bernice Tremnin (Lower Hutt), 18pts. Cliampion gentleman elocutionist.— Mr Gordon Oates (Palmerston North), Champion boy elocutionist. —Douglas Carlyle (Dannevirke), 18pts. Champion girl eloctuionist. —Miss Ivena Potlian (aHstings). Champion lady vocalist.—Miss M. Penketh (Palmerston North), lfipts. Champion dancer. —Miss Ivena Pothan (Hastings) and Miss Etline Hemmingsen (Palmerston North) equal, lOpts. Champion national dancer. —Miss Pat Over (Palmerston North), ISpts. Miss Gwen Gibbs’s special cup for dancing (18 years and over).—Miss Lorraine Major (Palmerston North), the festival excellent service was rendered bv the secretary (Mr K. G. Chamberlain), to whose untiring efforts, much of the success of the competitions is due.

In Iho tap ballets, 13 years and over, there were eight entries; in the tap ballet, 12 years and under, the Jean Scott School of Dancing gained first and second awards lrorri threo entries. Success lins attended the efforts or Gladys Corner, of Palmerston North, in tlie dancing section. In the classes under 10 years of age she won the tap and demi-character , sections, was placed second in the skipping and operatic dances under 10, second in the open eccentric dance, and third in the Irish jig under 10.
