CANTERBURY SUPERIOR.
SHIELD-HOLDERS BEATEN
Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 29. Unable to counter the brilliant thrusts by the home team’s backs, Southland was beaten by Canterbury on Saturday afternoon by 19 points to seven. It was fast, open football on a dry ground, and there was no question of Canterbury’s superiority among the backs, who made all the openings from which scores came. The best were Hooper, the All Black, and K. S. Mortlock, who last Saturday was not chosen to play against the Springboks. Canterbury led 16— 4 at half-time, but in the second half Southland showed more enterprise and defended much more effectively. It must be mentioned that only seven members of the team which wdn the Ranfurly Shield from Otago played tor Southland, and these seven were outstanding, showing that the Canterbury task would have been difficult indeed had Southla'nd been at full strength. The match was not remarkable for outstanding forward play. Scorers for Canterbury were Herman Chinnery (two), Garrett, Hooper. McAuliffe converted one try and Herman one. For Southland Thomas potted a goal and Sutherland scored an unconverted try.
