QUEEN CANDIDATE.

CROWNING AT AVHAKARONGO. (From Our Own Correspondent.) AVHAKARONGO, Aug. 30. All roads led to the Whakarongo Hall on Saturday evening, when the installation of coloured lights outside and in had transformed tho district into a veritable ■ fairyland. The hall was packed to overflowing, and excitement was intense when, with pomp and ceremony, the queen and her attendants walked through the ball to-take their places on the stage. The queen and princess were robed in white, the green and white of the Hall Queen’s train and her attendants setting off the more regal purple and gold of the queen herself. Three officials first took the stage—Alcesrs J. Lynch, Master of Ceremonies; E. Heneghan, Lord Mayor; E. Johanson, High Chancellor. The secretaries of the two Queen Committees returned thanks on behalf of their respective queens. Mr H. Gore especially mentioned Mrs James (secretary of the Hall Queen Committee) and Mr J. Morris for their excellent assistance. He congratulated the queen on her win, and the Princess Olga on her sportsmanship. Mr H. Wood, on behalf of the queen herself, drew attentit ion to the work done by Messrs L. Newcombe (secretary), F. Eagle and W. Jones. Both passed a special vote of thanks to the townsppeople for their generosity. The order of appearance of the royal procession was ns follows: —Britannia, Miss Hilda Christianson; heralds, Messrs 'Nancy Mitchell and Joan Coutts; officer in waiting, Mrs Bangay; Princess Olga and her attendants, Miss Olga Uhrbom, Lloyd Cresswell, Peter Christiansen, Irene Hodgson, Alma Crosswell; sword-bearer, Mr Bangay; crown and sceptre bearers, Misses Thelma Ncwcombe and Connie Vautier; Queen, Miss Lynda Speed}’, and attendants, Laurie Frith, Wyn Lacey, Thelma Taucher, Nola Smith, Connie Wood and Lily Chris!iansen; mistress of the robes,. Mrs James. Ten girls carried silver letters which read, “Sixty Yearn.” These letter-bearers were Vera Hodgson, Lena Knudsen, Marina Sly, Jean Harvey, Hazel Harrowficld, Aileen Olsen, Iris Johanson, Grace Hodgson, May Johanson, and Ngaire Olsen. Grouped round the back of tho stage, they mado an effective background. The conferring of knighthoods by the Queen oh Various personages caused a great deal of fun as Mr J. Lynch read out the warrants. Those on whom this honour was conferred wore Messrs R. Lloyd, E. Knudsen, H. Gore, A. Crawford. F. Eagle, W. Jones, .T. Romley. F. Coutts, J. Morris, Walter Vautier. Air Wood, for tho school, and Mr Gore, for tho hall, presented their respective Queens with a gift from their own committees. On behalf of the Jubilee Committee Air Knudsen handed each girl a beautiful pearl necklace. Air Gore presented tbo two representatives with a box of chocolates from the Hall Queen Committee and numerous gifts of flowers and parcels were handed up for both tho queen and princess. The hall was cleared and flashlight photographs taken. Later a short dance was held. Items made a pleasant interlude. They were: Recitation, Aliss Vautier; songs, Aliss B. Woodd; elocution, Air C. Erenstrom. Air and Airs Robert were capable stage managers, and Miss J. Wood was responsible for the music. . A combined service was held in the AAhakarongo Hall on Sunday afternoon, the attendance being very largo. Three members of the Ministers’ Association. Revs. A. Blakemore, J. S. Pate, and F. S. Ramson were associated in the conduct of the service. An appropriate address on “Change” was delivered by Air Pate, who dwelt on tho thought, “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, to-day, and forever.” A generous collection will bo divided between the Palmerston North orphanages.
