RANGITIKEI RACING CLUB.

SUCCESSFUL SEASON,

(From Our Own Correspondent.) BULLS, Aug. 30. There was an attendance of over 80 members at the annual general meeting of the Rangitikci Racing Club, and tho president, Air R. D. McKclvie, was in tho chair. Apologies were received from Mesdames F. J. Mansell and J. M. Bevan, Hon. H. T. Armstrong, and Messrs Q. 0. Wilson, F. C. Broolcie, A. W. Anion, B. Armstrong, and Jas. Bull. Prior to the general meeting Mr J. E. Walker’s motion, “that the £2 2s entrance foo for new members be cut out,” was considered at a special general meeting. Mr J. 11. Perrett seconded the motion, which was carried by a very largo majority. Tho chairman referred to tho deaths of three valuablo members during tho season, Mr J. J. McDonell (a life member, who was for many years honorary clerk of the course), Mr Alfred Tohu (another old member), and Air G. Luoni (who had conducted the publican’s booths satisfactorily for some years). On tho motion, of the chairman, seconded by tho hon..treasurer dAir G. H. Archer), the report and balance-sheet were adopted. The report read, inter alia: “The annual statement of accounts shows that after expending £157 9s 8d on maintenance and improvements, and writing off £174 14s 9d for depreciation, a profit of £634 12s lid was made on the year’s working. Two very successful meetings wore hold, racing being first-class and attendances largo, as shown by the gates, which improved from £2Bl 7s 6d to £435 Is 6d, while members’ subscriptions totalled £2OO, against £162 the previous year. Tho totalisator handled £18,415 10s, an increase of about 46 per cent, on the total (£12,560 10s) of the 1935-36 season. Stakes distributed totalled £1590, as against £l2lO the previous year. The appointments have, been kept in good repair, and the tracks were never in better order than at present. If the progress shown during tho past three years is maintained, better accommodation will bo necessary for members and visitors before long. The farm has again proved a very valuable asset, tho profit being £292 12s 7d, and thanks are duo to members of tho farm committee, Messrs Q. O. Wilson and A. W. Anion. The resignation of our handicapper, Air J. E. Hcnrvs, is regretted. Mr. Henrys served the club faithfully and well since 1889, and we trust that _ his health will'improve as a result of his retirement from arduous work. The committee recommends that ■ Air J. E. Henrys be elected a life member of the club. Thanks are also duo to tho honorary officials and to the permanent staff, who carried out their duties capably; to the hon. surgeon, Dr. T. G. Harpur; to the hon. veterinary practitioner, Air A. Seymour; and to members of tho Marton division of St. John Ambulance, for attendance on race days. The bank overdraft has been reduced from £2233 to £1622 during the year, and < the position is now a very sound one. There is every reason to look back on tho past season with satisfaction, and to tho future with some degree of optimism.” As the number of nominations did not exceed the positions to be filled, the following officers were duly elected President,' Afr R. D. AlcKclvie; vice-presidents, Messrs F. O. Bailey, J. H. Perrett, J. Tricker and J. E. Walker; committee, Alessrs E. A. Caldow, J. J. Mansell and D. W. Wilson; hon. treasurer, Air G. 11. Archer. Air F. Cutts, senr., was elected auditor. Air Perrett referred to the retirement of Air J. Henrys, who, he said, was a gentleman of the very highest integrity, and a wonderful judge of racing. Mr Henrys’s record was a fine one, and ho moved that the honour of life membership be conferred on him. Mr Mo* Kelvie, in seconding the motion, said that Mr Henrys not only did his work to the satisfaction of tho club, but his advice was at all times sound. Mr Caldow suggested that Mr Henrys should be invited to attend tho next race meeting, and that a photograph should, bo taken as. a record of the handicapper’s long connection with the club. The suggestion was adopted, and the motion passed unanimously. A social evening followed, and members enjoyed a fine musical programme supplied by Messrs Wilson, Ganderton, xßullan (2), and McDermott (2), Mr B. Crozier presiding at the piano. The following toast list was honoured : “The Rangitikei Racing Club, proposed by Mr A. Way and replied to bv Mr McKclvie; “Life Members, Mr Walker—Messrs L. M. Taverner, J. 11. Perrett and F. O.
