Though the Japanese and Chinese armies are still standing in North China within striking instance, and the English and American residents of Pekin have been warned to assemble at safety points the moment the alarm is sdunded, the situation is reported to be easier. A truce is pending. A settlement is believed to have been reached between Tokio and Nanking. This report comes from the Daily Telegraph’s Tokio correspondent, also from Shanghai, which adds that the terms are not published for fear of exciting public opinion. However, it is understood that all of Japan’s demands have been met. The Daily Telegraph’s Tokio correspondent says it is impossible at present to say which side is making concessions. but the Japanese War Office today ordered the suspension of the shipment of war supplies to China.. The 37th Division of the Chinese 29th Route Army began to evacuate Pekin to-night. The Chinese troops are still holding Wangping, the Marco Polo bridge at Lioukouchiao, and Papaoslian. Traffic has been resumed on the Pekin-Hankow railway.

A Tientsin report states that the Japanese have arrested Tsai Shutung, a former officer of the Chinese army, on the suspicion of being involved in a plot to assassinate the Japanese Ambassador, Mr Kawagoe.
