PIPE OLD AGE.

93rd BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED. Still hale and hearty, and able to read, sew and knit, -Mrs Sarah Tunnicliffe, of Giesen Road, Feilding, celebrated her 93rd britliday yesterday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs A. Neil, Gieson Roact. Despite her great age, Mrs Tunnicliffe retains her faculties and is able to converse and take an | interest in current events. Her eyesight is remarkable and she is able to dis-1 tinguish the Post Office building from the verandah of her daughter’s home some considerable distance away. Mrs Tunnicliffe was born at Nelson in 1844 and is the daughter of the late Mr 1 John Norris, who was head shepherd to Sir Edward Stafford. He was highly respected and was known as “Honest John.” Her husband, Mr Tunnicliffe, died four years ago at the age of 04 years. Mrs Tunnicliffe and her late husband came to Feilding in 1902. and duilng their long residence they made many friends and enjoyed the esteem of the community. Among those who joined in wishing Mrs Tunnicliffe “many happy returns” yesterday, were Hon. J. G. Cobbe. M.P., and members of the Methodist Church, including Rev. and Mrs J. H. Allen, Mrs C. E. Taylor, and Mrs Joseph Darragh. A host of telegrams and letters of congratulation were also received from all parts of New Zealand. Last evening members of her family were present at a dinner given in her honour, and on the centre of the table was a huge cake made and iced by her daughter, Mrs W. Brown, of Masterton. Besides a family of seven adults, Mm Tunnicliffe lias 42 grandchildren and 30 greatgrandchildren. Her sons are Messrs H. S. Tunnicliffe (Waimiha), AVnt. Tunnicliffe (Auckland), Owen Tunnicliffe (Rotorua). and her daughters are Mesdames 0. Sutton (Nelson), W. Brown (Masterton), Jack Noble (Feilding), and Alex Neil (Feilding).
