EDUCATION BOARD.

MEETING AT WANGANUI. At the monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board yesterday, Mr E. E. Hemingway presided. Also present were Colonel J. H. Whyte, Messrs M. H. Oram, J. W. Batchelar, J. W. Mudford, W. Annabel! P. Munro and ,B. T. Lukeson. A letter was received from the committee of the College Street School drawing attention to the state of the assembly area at the rear of the building and. requesting that the board should have the work carried out under the Government subsidy scheme. The matter is to be brought before the Government by the hoard so that the work can be carried out with the assistance of a Government subsidy.

Mr F. C. Campbell, retiring headmaster at the Russell Street School, wrote thanking the board for its letter of appreciation of 1m services. Notification was received from the Education Department that it was making a grant of two-thirds of the cost of installing electric light in the Ashhurst School.

Consideration was given to a request from the provisional committee for the erection of a school at Manawatu Heads and after a report from Mr Mudford had been submitted outlining the reasons why a school was not essential it was decided to inform the committee accordingly. Mr Mudford reported that the present school bus was satisfactory a.nd that a number of residents whose names appeared on the petition were not permanent residents of the district.

An application was received from the Russell Street School Committee for assistance toward the cost of repairing and topdressing asphalt.—The matter is to he considered by the architect after an inspection of the area on his next visit to Palmerston North, and it was left in the hands of the local members and the architect with power to act.-

Advice was received from the Education Department that the consolidation of the Awiplmri School with the Lytton Street School had been-' approved. Approval w.as also expressed of the proposed consolidation of the Main South Roa.d School with the Rangiwalra School, conditional on the proposed bus route being reduced by four miles a school day. The secretary reported that the poll of householders taken at Clvdesdale regarding the consolidation of the school was: Against 28, for nil. It was decided to forward the information to the Minister of Education.
